After a motorcyclist's backpack holding PHP3.4 million (US$71,957) in cash ripped loose, frantic people raced to capture the banknotes that poured down the Cebu South Road viaduct.

The rider in issue, identified as John Mark Barrientos, worked at a mall's e-wallet loading kiosk, according to Major Jonathan Taneo, chief of the Mambaling Police Station. Unaware that the cash had begun to fall out of his rucksack while in route, Barrientos was just 50 kilometers away when he became aware of the money's flying trajectory.

Videos of the incident quickly spread on social media sites, revealing a varied reaction from spectators and fellow motorists. Some Good Samaritans were seen hurrying to help retrieve the dispersed dollars that carpeted the roadway, while others opted to take advantage of the chance for selfish gain, pocketing the cash.

As of this writing, law enforcement officials indicated that around PHP2 million of the spilt cash had been returned.

Major Taneo launched an appeal, pleading with the people to hand over the remaining funds to authorities.

Authorities are currently investigating recordings and CCTV footage to identify people who witnessed the event.
